Five Finger Death Punch-Don’t Stop “The Bleeding”

by Stephen Saylor on August 27, 2009

Five Finger Death Punch, FFDP, The Bleeding, song, music, band, metal

FFDP opens up each song with both fists flying and doesn’t stop until the listener is on his back but fully getting the point. They drive their message home with heavy guitar licks, rapid fire drumming, and vocals that range from melodic to manic.

Try not to get whiplash as your head spins on their roller coaster ride filled with love and hate, hope and despair, pleasure and pain. If you break a bone moshing in your living room, don’t expect a house call from the band.

Their new album, “The Way of the Fist“, features a soon to be metal anthem, “The Bleeding.” It opens with intense and melodic guitar work followed by some heavy bass beats and then a screaming lead guitar that slices the jugular to start the Bleeding. The lead vocalist lets the pain flow crying out, “I’m better off without you” and then reaches down deep to growl, “The lying, the bleeding, the screaming was tearing me apart, the hatred, the beatings; it’s over.”

The pain and anger are totally released by the end of the song in a flurry of contradictions and dichotomies. So empty but better off without you. Although he can paint the mirror black, he can’t lose the memories or turn off his taste buds. The girl that caused his pain is filthy and beautiful. A dark burning star. He sees himself as ugly and sick with a perfect disease. Yet he is better off now.

This heavy hitting assault on his self-esteem continues in Ashes. Despite the negative experiences and messages that society and others gives him he remains unwilling to bow the knee to despair and go down in defeat.

I’m a jinx, a curse, some say the worst…..It doesn’t affect me in the least
In “Salvation“, the band confronts the monkey see, monkey do, hypocrisy of those around them.

I’ve no faith in your fate….. Still I find salvation

While angrily rejecting the religious hypocrisy they see around them they still admit seeking salvation and rejecting total despair. If your ready for a band that does, “Bring it!” as they rise up from the ashes, try to stop the bleeding and still try to find salvation in a world filled with disappointment, darkness, and despair, your ready to meet Five Fingered Death Punch.

I have to say, I really don’t like 5 Finger Death Punch. It’s basically average quality nu-metal made by a bunch of old blokes. They’ve got huge label sponsorship behind them so they’re getting loads of promotion, but I wander how long they’ll last….? There are so many much higher quality bands out there that should be getting the exposure (Baroness, Virus, etc.)

Well, to each their own opinion. Mine is this: Five Finger Death Punch has a sound that is melodically metallic. They are not your “average quality” Metal band by any means. If the guitar work doesn’t knock you on your ass, Ivan will with his vocals. They rock hard, and they rock real. If, like me, when something sends shivers down your spine, you go back for more. That’s what Five Finger Death Punch does..well to me at least. Give them a listen, and they may just do the same to you. Oh, and old blokes?? What exactly is old to you?
